About the Yenching Academy:
Yenching Academy of Peking University offers an elite, interdisciplinary Master's program in China Studies. This specially designed, English-taught degree program aims to push the study of China beyond the boundaries of traditionally defined Humanities and Social Sciences disciplines. All Yenching Scholars receive a full fellowship that covers tuition, accommodation in the Yenching Academy House, a travel stipend for one round-trip journey between your base city and Beijing (the base city must be a city within the country of your nationality; cost of this round-trip will be estimated and calculated by YCA), basic medical insurance, a monthly stipend, and expenses related to research.
Each year the Yenching Academy admits around 120 scholars from 40+ countries and regions. In addition to coursework, scholars participate in field studies and self-designed research trips, taking advantage of opportunities to customize and maximize their experiences in Beijing, and within China’s leading university.

Student Speakers:
Caitlin Kavanaugh Tierney (2022 Cohort)
Originally from New York, United States, Caitlin Tierney graduated summa cum laude from the University of Virginia with a B.A. in East Asian Studies. With a concentration on China, Caitlin studied Chinese history, policy, and social fabrics. Inspired by her experience attending IUP Tsinghua’s Chinese Language Center during the beginning of the pandemic, Caitlin culminated her undergrad by writing a thesis on China’s response to COVID-19. At UVA, Caitlin’s activities also reflected her interest in cultural exchange as an ESL tutor, an exchange student buddy, and a resident/coordinator of the Spanish-immersion dormitory. In Yenching Academy’s Law and Society research area, Caitlin explores the intersection of society and culture, particularly how culture and values develop and are expressed across different generations of Chinese society.
Jasper Abrahams (2022 Cohort)
Jasper Abrahams is a Belgian student with a bachelor’s degree in Chinese studies at the Catholic University of Leuven. He previously studied in Ghent and Paris, and obtained a master’s degree in European law at the University of Paris I, Panthéon-Sorbonne. His academic trajectory has mainly allowed him to explore the interaction between law and politics, but his interests range from economics to literature and art. Although his interest in China and Chinese culture came at a later age, it is no less sincere. In Beijing, he plans to deepen his knowledge of the Chinese legal system, engage with passionate scholars from all over the world, and improve his language proficiency. Moreover, he hopes that the Yenching Academy will provide the ideal next step on his way to becoming a worthy China scholar.
Janpal LaChapelle (2022 Cohort)
Janpal LaChapelle was born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska, before graduating from Stanford University with a Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Political Science and a minor in East Asia Studies concentrating on China. As a research assistant at Stanford’s Freeman Spogli Institute, he studied security policy and international relations theory, focusing on great power relations and institutional cooperation. His undergraduate thesis interrogated narratives of Chinese foreign direct investment and institutions in Central Asia. Janpal is pursuing the Politics and International Relations track at Yenching and is planning to empirically study China’s role in international cooperative institutions while diversifying his theoretical understanding of cooperation.
