Abstract:

In the past four decades, China has witnessed a dramatic economic growth, which is rarely seen in world history. This “Chinese Miracle”, however, can be better understood only in a historical perspective because, as Dwight Perkins put, “China's present is a continuity of its past, or the persistence of the past.” If we look back at China's performance in the past four centuries, we will find that both China's economy and China's foreign trade fluctuated widely which were going almost on side by side. Is it just pure coincidence? What is relationship between the two? How does this relationship work? Why is China's economic growth inseparable from the outside world? We will try to get answers to these questions from China's experience since 1700, which will be helpful for us to know better about “the Chinese Miracle” today, which is “the greatest story of our generation” (Jim O' Neill).
