Editor’s note: This summer, our Yenching Scholars took the opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge through volunteer activities and field trips, gaining a deeper understanding of China through personal experience.
Yao Tianyu, a Chinese student from the 2023 cohort, joined other 17 students in the “Haizhou Youth Partnership”, a volunteer summer camp in the Haizhu district, of Guangzhou. Through a two-way selection, Yao Tianyu secured an internship at the Administration of Technology, Industry, Business and Informatization of Haizhu District. During her internship, Yao participated in the administration’s work efforts on issues like local industrial layout as well as the introduction and support of emerging industries.Yao remarked, “ I would never have realized how much effort goes into crafting sound policies if I hadn’t joined this summer camp, Everyone in the team tried their best for to optimize regional planning and develop feasible policies to ensure better growth of enterprises in Haizhu District.”
In media interviews with CCTV’s Focus Report (Jiaodian Fangtan) and Guangzhou Daily, Yao expressed her desire to contribute her knowledge to the modernization and renewal of urban villages.
Cristian de Silveira, a Yenching Scholar from Brazil and also a member of the 2023 cohort, spent his summer vacation in the Xiongan New Area. His time there was documented by a camera team for GLOBALink of the Xinhua News Agency. Cristian explored the rich cultural heritage of Xiongan through interviews with archaeologists and history enthusiasts, as well as field trips to ancient city sites and archaeological excavations, furthering his own understanding of archaeology.
