On June 14th, 2016, Yenching Academy hosted its End of the Year Celebration for the 2015 – 2016 academic year. Dean Yuan Ming, Associate Dean John Holden, Director of Academics Lu Yang, Director of Operations Jiang Guohua and Assistant to the Dean Chen Changwei attended the event.
Dean Yuan commented on the Peking University pin worn by Yenching Scholar Tom Watson as a symbol of change and growth. “Thirty years ago, I also wore the same design of pin in my graduation. This not only represents your identity, but also your youth and your fight for what you believe in.”
Associate Dean John Holden also addressed the students by encouraging them to continue learning from each other, and to think about China and its relationship with the world. “I believe you must be able to dosomething! I will not say goodbye here – instead I would like to say see you again! I believe that one day, we will see each other again at a different setting.”
Professor Lu remarked, “a student should have the spirit of sacrifice to benefit the world.” Armed with their experience at Yenching Academy, there is little doubt that the Yenching Scholars, no matter their field of work or study, will continue to succeed, and to make the world a better place.
Professor Jiang thanked all Yenching Scholars for all their academic and extra-curricular work this year.“You are all the first class of Yenching Scholars, the trailblazers. Yenching Academy is a big family and everyone is a valuable member of it. No matter where you are, Yenching Academy will always be your home,” he said.
Yenching Scholars later watched a video recounting the memorable moments of the year. The laughter and warmth, the sweat – and perhaps the occasional tears – all reminded Scholars of their growth this year.
Dean Yuan and Associate Dean Holden presented the Yenching Academy Outstanding Academics Award and Outstanding Contribution to the Academy Award, respectively.
James Ashcroft gave a speech on behalf of the students. “This year, Yenching Scholars came from all sort of different backgrounds to work together and build lasting friendships. These are some extraordinary people. I feel very lucky being here and thankful for what Yenching Academy offered us.”
Yenching Academy Student Council President Cody Abbey presented gifts to Yenching staff on behalf of all students, a display of students’ gratitude for the staff’s hard work and commitment throughout the year.
The celebration came to a close as Yenching Scholars sang an a cappella version of “Stand By Me.”
June 14threpresents an end as well as a new beginning. We wish all the best to all of our students in their future journeys.
