Chang Jung-Erhread bio
Jung-Erh Chang was born in Touliu City, Taiwan Province, but she spent nearly ten years of her student life in Mainland China, from elementary school to senior high school. She grew up in Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province, which was her grandparents’ hometown. The family origin and her special growth experience strengthened her emotional connections with Mainland China, deepening her understanding of Chinese culture, as well as encouraging her to explore the roots of Chinese spirits, which relates to her family and life closely. She received her Bachelor’s degree in history from National Taiwan University, with a minor in Chinese literature in 2016. AS well as this, she was a visiting graduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from September 2016 to May 2017. Her research interest focuses on gender and family history in late imperial China. Her undergraduate thesis is about the sister relationship among the three talented women of the Yuan Family in Qing dynasty China. At the Yenching Academy, she wants to continue exploring related issues, using the approach of gender theories and going beyond the disciplinary boundary between history and literature studies, reconstructing life histories, emotional connections and social norms surrounding women in late imperial China. In the future, she hopes to apply her knowledge to the development of the cultural industry, devoting herself to bringing the research in Chinese history and culture to the public through various and creative ways.
Chen Weitingread bio
Chen Weiting, from China, graduated with a degree of Public Management from Renmin University of China majoring in Urban Planning and Management. During her undergraduate period, she showed a great interest in volunteer service. She has been involved in the volunteer teaching program for two years and proposed a new cultivation program as ‘Power of the Seed-Cultivation Program of the Hope School’, which transformed the teaching model from large class teaching to small group discussions, providing pupils with the chance to think independently, express themselves and gain a feeling of being concerned about and understood. In the third year of her undergraduate study, she carried out an exchange to Macquarie University in Australia with a full-scholarship for a whole year, and she volunteered in the Sydney Royal Easter Show, where she was nominated as the Volunteer of Year for her sincere passion in volunteer services. It would be wonderful if she could meet peers with the same passion in Yenching Academy. Sparing no efforts in studying, volunteering and researching programs, she was nominated as the representative of her college as the Principle Scholar in her graduation year. Through her study and internships in the area of economics, she gained an interest in investment and industry analysis. Therefore, she wishes to further her study at the Yenching Academy in economics, deepen her understanding on Chinese TMT industries under the context of Globalization and the bigger picture.
Chiang Longwenread bio
Longwen Chiang graduated with honors in Political Science from the University of Chicago. Shaped by his upbringing as a Taiwanese immigrant in the Philippines, Longwen spent his time at Chicago examining the impact of political and economic conditions on the policies of developing nations, and championing social justice causes. Throughout his time at college, he served as the personal assistant to civil rights leader, Jesse Jackson, where he helped design and advocate solutions for sustainable housing in disadvantaged communities. A Jeff Metcalf fellow, Longwen also traveled to China to document the impact of environmental degradation on coastal wetlands and migratory fauna while working for the Paulson Institute. Witnessing the adverse impact of agriculture on natural habitats, he returned to Beijing after graduation to work for the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), a Washington-based think tank. At IFPRI, he published a book and several papers on sustainable farming, agricultural finance, and climate change adaptation in Asia as part of a multinational research team. Wanting to bring his experiences into the private sector in the Philippines, he started Loadrunner, a social enterprise that provides logistics and financial services to subsistence farmers in the Philippines. As a Yenching Scholar, Longwen plans to study economics and management in order to bring his start-up to China and continue to make a positive impact for millions of people.
Guan Hongyuread bio
Guan Hongyu received his Bachelor’s degree from Peking University, majoring in Finance. There, he was honored as an Outstanding Student of Peking University. Hongyu participated in many communication activities during undergraduate years. As the president of Global View Initiative, the biggest Sino-US communication program on campus, he led team visits to six cities and numerous well-known universities and companies in the United States. He and his team also improved communications between PKU and PKU alumni in North America. Hongyu worked as a core member of the PKU International Culture Festival preparation group for two years, cooperating with over 100 international students. He has been a class monitor for 16 years and served as General Secretary of Youth League at PKU’s Yuanpei College. Hongyu has completed internships at China International Capital Corporation Investment Banking Division, China Media Capital Partners, and the Boston Consulting Group. These inspired him to start his career in finance. At the Yenching Academy, Hongyu will study Economics and Management. He hopes to further analyze Chinese economic issues, especially ways to link the Chinese and international capital markets. Hongyu is 22 years old, and was born and raised in Tianjin, China.
Guo Youziread bio
At Zhejiang University, Guo Youzi pursued her BA in English Language and Culture while also studying politics and economics. She was also a member of Cultural China, a training plan that helped her further understand Chinese Studies. Youzi has published two articles in Guangming Daily, and has received academic and program-specific scholarships from the Chinese government, the Australian government and other enterprises. Meanwhile, Youzi has served as Vice President of the Student Union, and as a voluntary interpreter in Liangzhu for three years to introduce Liangzhu Culture to foreign visitors. She also ranked top 4 in British Parliamentary Debate competition and top 3 in Dramatic Competition. Youzi has participated in two exchange programs at UC Berkeley and University of Sydney, through which she discovered her passion for international relations. She conducted a research project concerning Germany’s participation in peace-keeping action. After the volunteering experience in Nepal, Youzi realized the importance of communication between different cultures, so at the Yenching Academy, Youzi would like to focus on Chinese diplomatic policy and Sino-American relations. She hopes to be a good story-teller and to present China to the world.
Huang Fangyuanread bio
Huang Fangyuan is from Beijing, China. She completed her undergraduate degree in the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, with a focus on Chinese literature. She was named Merit Student Pacesetter of PKU for her excellent academic performance, and was awarded the Tang Lixin Scholarship for three consecutive years. Fangyuan has been actively engaged in cross-cultural communication, and has attended exchange programs in Australia, the United States and Japan. She was deputy editor for the PKU Student Press Corps and has interviewed many people, including Iqbal Riza, Special Adviser to Secretary-General Kofi Annan, and Meric Gertler, President of the University of Toronto. Fangyuan’s academic interests include comparative literature and culture. During her sophomore year, she received a research grant to study images of women in late Qing fiction (1849-1911). Later, she closely examined the treatment of foreign countries in Chinese novels. As a Yenching Scholar, Fangyuan hopes to study the interaction between Chinese literature and world literature in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of how China and the West perceive each other.
Huang Sizhuoread bio
Huang Sizhuo studied Business Journalism and minored in Marketing at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing. She also researched linguistics, communication, and economics. In her graduate thesis, she conducted a comparative analysis of doctors’ identity construction in China and the U.S. Sizhuo interned at a magazine and an e-commerce company, where she witnessed the emergence and collapse of the peer-to-peer lending. While interning at an export-import bank, she felt the financing troubles of middle and small businesses. She has also volunteered in hospitals and participated in various competitions and clubs. These experiences helped her determine her mission: to mediate misunderstandings among different people and promote health care and safety. She plans to engage in more social work and increase her knowledge and skills at the Yenching Academy.
Jin Huyiread bio
Jin Huyi, from China, graduated from the school of Economics in Shandong University, majoring in Economics and Finance. During his undergraduate career, he was in an international academic environment where the courses were all taught by foreign faculty in English. In his senior year, he studied at the University of Pennsylvania, where he had the chance to learn leading knowledge about finance and communicate with world-class experts at the Wharton School. He is passionate about research, and has joined two NSFC projects to research the informal finance and economic growth of China. In addition, he also has enjoyed many extra-curricular activities. He loves football and played as the captain of his school team. He served as the deputy chairman in the Student Union of his university, where he organized multiple student activities. What's more, he also worked as a volunteer in the 22nd International Congress of Historical Science and the 2nd Penn Wharton China Summit. In the future, as a Yenching Scholar in Peking University, Jin wants to pursue the Economics and Management research area, focusing on the research about China's economic growth, especially in the financial sector.
Li Mengranread bio
Born and raised in a small town of Inner Mongolia, Li Mengran studied Biomedical English in Peking University Health Science Center, and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree of science and a minor of French. Leo has focused his studies at university on medical humanities and health policies, and is keen on cross-cultural communication. In addition to academic work, he also showed great interest in international relations, working in Peking University’s Asian International Model United Nations (AIMUN) for four consecutive years. He served as the Secretary-General of AIMUN in 2016, and was sponsored to travel to the U.S. to provide academic guidance to Chinese high school students participating in the Harvard Model United Nations and North American Invitational Model United Nations held in Georgetown University. He then took a step forward from model UN to the real UN system, interning at the World Health Organization China Office. Apart from his MUN career, Leo also actively contributed to a number of school and social activities, including serving as the president of PKU’s medical translation association, and voluntarily teaching for half a month in a remote Yunnan village. He enjoys different types of music in his spare time. At the Yenching Academy, he is eager to gain more insight and inspiration into his own country’s public policy and diplomatic relations.
Li Mengzhenread bio
Li Mengzhen is expected to graduate from the School of Government at Beijing Normal University, where she studied human resources and psychology, in June 2017. As an undergraduate, she won many top awards in her campus including the First Class Academic Scholarship and the Cyrus Tang Moral Education Scholarship. Aside from her basic curriculum, she devoted herself to field studies regarding the well-being of Beijing residents in July 2014. She also spent a year in the National Undergraduate Training Program for Innovation: the influencing factors and driving mechanism of the Makerspaces talent gathering, based on a multiple case analysis in Beijing. The research had proven very valuable for Makerspaces both on and off campus. Mengzhen was the vice president of the BNU Love Association, where she was responsible for the PR and the liaison department. BNU Love, which had been awarded the Best Student Association of her school in 2016, delivered exceptional-quality educational resources to less developed areas of China. Furthermore, she delegated for Singapore in the 62nd Harvard Model United Nations. With a strong interest in corporate strategy, she is working as a research assistant in the Boston Consulting Group. She concentrates on market research and competitor analysis, providing innovative ideas with supporting details. Mengzhen will study Economics and Management at the Yenching Academy, where she hopes to gain more knowledge about the roles China plays in the global market. She is planning to work in consultancy where she can create better solutions for NGOs and start-ups.
